Cheapest VPN for Canada: introductory prices, renewal prices and refunds

Counting renewal, the cheapest plans we saw were CyberGhost in euros (EUR 56.94 a year after the first 26 months) and Private Internet Access in US dollars (USD 79 every three years). Mullvad never changes its EUR 5 monthly price, so there is no renewal jump at all.

The short answer

The cheapest VPN depends on whether you look at the first bill or the second. On October 6, 2026, reading each provider's pricing page from outside Canada, the lowest advertised monthly rate was CyberGhost's EUR 2.19 on its 2-year plan, and it also had the lowest renewal we could read among the euro-priced providers: EUR 56.94 a year. In US dollars, Private Internet Access showed USD 2.03 a month on a 3-year plan that renews at USD 79 every three years. Mullvad charges a flat EUR 5 a month on every plan length, which it shows as about CA$8 (CA$8.02 when we read it).

No provider showed us Canadian dollars. They set prices by location, so your checkout will show your own currency and the amount may differ. We have not converted any figure.

Introductory price versus renewal price

Most VPN providers advertise a monthly figure that only exists on a long plan paid up front. You pay the whole term on day one, and the monthly figure is that total spread over the months. When the term ends, the plan renews at a regular rate that is usually much higher.

NordVPN shows the gap clearly. Its 2-year Basic plan was EUR 94.23 for the first 27 months and renews at EUR 139.08 a year. The renewal for one year is higher than the whole first term. ExpressVPN's 2-year Basic plan was EUR 69.72 for the first 28 months and renews at EUR 79.95 a year. IPVanish's 2-year Essential plan was $57.36 for the first two years and renews at $99.99 a year.

A few providers keep the gap small:

  • CyberGhost billed EUR 56.94 for the first 26 months (sold as 2 years + 2 months) and renews at EUR 56.94 a year. The per-year cost roughly doubles after the first term, but the renewal is still the lowest euro figure we saw.
  • Private Internet Access renews its 3-year plan at USD 79 every three years, and its 1-year plan at the same USD 47.88 it charges the first year.
  • Mullvad charges EUR 5 a month for one month, one year or ten years. There is no introductory rate and no jump.

Surfshark, Proton VPN and TunnelBear did not show a renewal amount in the page text we read. Surfshark's FAQ says you are "charged the applicable renewal price". Check the figure in your account or at checkout before you pay.

Which cheap VPN fits which reader

Lowest cost over several years, in euros: CyberGhost

CyberGhost had the lowest first-term rate and the lowest euro renewal in our data, plus the longest refund window: 45 days on long plans. It covers 7 devices and lists servers in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver. It is based in Romania, and Deloitte Audit Romania has audited it three times, according to its privacy hub.

Lowest renewal in US dollars: Private Internet Access

Private Internet Access showed USD 2.03 a month on its 3-year plan with 3 extra months, renewing at USD 79 every three years. It allows unlimited devices and lists Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver. Keep in mind that it is headquartered in Denver, Colorado, under United States law, and its no-logs page mentions two Deloitte audits without the years.

Predictable price: Mullvad

If you dislike renewal surprises, Mullvad is the simplest. EUR 5 a month, shown as about CA$8 (CA$8.02 when we read it), on every plan length, and CAD is one of the currencies it accepts. It covers 5 devices and lists Calgary, Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver. Mullvad has no affiliate program, so we earn nothing if you choose it. More in our Mullvad review.

Cheapest for a big household: Surfshark

Surfshark's 2-year Starter plan showed EUR 2.49 a month with unlimited devices. If you have more than ten devices, that matters more than a small difference in the monthly rate. The catch is that the renewal amount is not published as a figure on its pricing page. Our NordVPN vs Surfshark comparison sets the two side by side.

What a cheap plan still has to include

A low price is only a saving if the service does what you need. Before you pick the cheapest line in the table, check three things against your own use.

Canadian servers. All of the low-priced providers list servers in Canada. CyberGhost, Private Internet Access and Surfshark list Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver. IPVanish and Mullvad add Calgary. TunnelBear names Canada among its countries without listing cities.

Who stands behind the no-logs claim. CyberGhost points to three Deloitte Audit Romania reports. IPVanish names Schellman Compliance and an audit in April 2025. Private Internet Access mentions two Deloitte audits without the years. Mullvad lists audits by Cure53, NCC Group and Assured.

Where the company is based. CyberGhost is based in Romania and Mullvad in Sweden. Private Internet Access is headquartered in Denver, Colorado, and IPVanish describes itself as U.S.-based and owned by Ziff Davis. If you prefer a provider outside the United States, that narrows the cheap options.

How to pay less without surprises

  1. Read the first-term total, not the monthly rate. That is the amount that leaves your account on day one.
  2. Find the renewal line. It is usually in small print under the plan or in the FAQ. If it is not shown, ask support or check your account after you buy.
  3. Note the refund deadline. Most providers give 30 days. Mullvad gives 14 and Windscribe 7, with a data limit. TunnelBear excludes monthly plans and purchases made through the iOS or Google Play stores.
  4. Set a reminder before the term ends. You can then decide whether to renew, switch, or turn off automatic renewal in your account.
  5. Check the currency at checkout. The prices on this page are in euros or US dollars because that is what providers showed us. If your card charges in another currency, your bank may add a fee.

Price is only one part of the choice. Canadian server cities, jurisdiction and published audits are compared on our best VPN for Canada page, and our review method explains where each figure comes from.

Common questions

Why do VPN prices jump after the first term?

Long plans are sold at an introductory rate for the first term, often with bonus months. When the term ends, the plan renews at the provider's regular rate. NordVPN's 2-year Basic plan, for example, costs EUR 94.23 for the first 27 months and renews at EUR 139.08 a year, as shown on October 6, 2026 from outside Canada.

Can I avoid paying the renewal price?

You can turn off automatic renewal in your account and buy a new plan when the first one ends. Whether a new introductory deal is available to existing customers depends on the provider, so check before your term ends.

Why are the prices on this page not in Canadian dollars?

No provider showed us Canadian dollars. They set prices by location, and we read them from outside Canada, so we saw euros or US dollars. Proton's payment system offered only Swiss francs, euros and US dollars. Your checkout will show your own currency, and the amount may differ.

Which cheap VPN has the longest refund window?

CyberGhost showed a 45-day money-back guarantee on its long plans, 14 days on the monthly plan. Most of the others offer 30 days. Mullvad offers 14 days, except for cash payments, and Windscribe 7 days (its terms also say 7 business days) if you used less than 10 GB.
