Mullvad VPN review for Canada (2026): one flat price, WireGuard only

Mullvad charges the same EUR 5 a month whether you pay for a month, a year or longer, so there is no renewal jump. It covers 5 devices, uses WireGuard only and lists servers in four Canadian cities.

Verdict

Mullvad is the simplest paid VPN to budget for. It costs EUR 5 a month on every plan length, so the price you see is the price you keep paying. It lists servers in Calgary, Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver, uses WireGuard only and has published several outside audits. The limits are 5 devices per account and a refund window of 14 days.

This review is an editorial assessment from Mullvad's own pages and server data. We did not run our own tests. Our review method explains how we work.

Who it suits, and who should look elsewhere

Mullvad suits you if:

  • you dislike low introductory prices that jump at renewal;
  • you want to pay month by month without a penalty;
  • you want a Calgary server along with Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver.

Look elsewhere if you have more than 5 devices, want a free plan, or need a protocol other than WireGuard. Proton VPN has a free plan and covers 10 devices on VPN Plus.

Plans and price

Mullvad's pricing page, checked on October 6, 2026, shows one rate: EUR 5 a month including VAT. The page states that "€5 is equivalent to" several amounts, including about CA$8 (CA$8.02 when we read it). That Canadian figure is Mullvad's own displayed equivalent, not our conversion. Mullvad lists CAD among the currencies it accepts, along with EUR, USD, GBP, SEK, NOK, CHF, AUD and NZD.

Plan lengthMonthly priceRenewal
1 monthEUR 5Same rate
1 yearEUR 5Same rate
1 decadeEUR 5Same rate

Paying for a longer period does not lower the monthly price, so you lose nothing by paying one month at a time. A year of Mullvad at that rate is EUR 60. For comparison, NordVPN's Basic plan renewed at EUR 139.08 a year on the same day. Our page on the cheapest VPN in Canada sets first-term and renewal prices side by side.

How the flat price compares

Several providers we looked at sell a cheap first term and renew at a higher yearly price. Mullvad does not. Here is a year of Mullvad next to the renewal price of the cheapest plan at three other providers, as each showed it on October 6, 2026. The currencies differ and we have not converted them.

ProviderCost of a year after any intro offer
MullvadEUR 60 (12 x EUR 5)
ExpressVPN BasicEUR 79.95 renewal
NordVPN BasicEUR 139.08 renewal
Windscribe yearlyUSD 69 (renews automatically)

The intro offers from NordVPN and ExpressVPN are cheaper per month than Mullvad for their first term. From the first renewal on, Mullvad costs less than both on these figures.

Servers in Canada and protocols

Mullvad's official relay list has four Canadian locations: Calgary, Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver. Its servers page and the relay data count 50 countries and 91 cities. That is a smaller network than the big commercial providers, but the Canadian coverage matches NordVPN's four cities.

Mullvad uses WireGuard. Its "Why Mullvad VPN" page describes quantum-resistant connections and obfuscation options (QUIC, LWO, Shadowsocks and TCP). OpenVPN appears on Mullvad's site only in the company history. If your router only supports OpenVPN, check before you buy. Our WireGuard vs OpenVPN page explains what changes between the two.

Privacy: jurisdiction and audits

Mullvad says it is "based in Sweden". Its about page names Mullvad VPN AB, owned by the parent company Amagicom AB, which it says is wholly owned by the founders.

Mullvad's about page links to these audits:

  • an audit of the Mullvad app, published September 2018;
  • an audit of the apps on all five platforms, published June 2020;
  • a Cure53 audit of the infrastructure, December 2020;
  • an Android app audit by NCC Group, March 2025;
  • a website audit by Assured, August 2025.

Each audit covers a different part of the service. Read the summaries in the sources below to see what each one checked.

What to check before you pay

  • Refund window. Mullvad offers a 14-day money-back guarantee, which does not apply to cash payments.
  • Device limit. Count your phones, laptops and tablets. Five is the maximum per account.
  • Currency. about CA$8 (CA$8.02 when we read it) is Mullvad's displayed equivalent of EUR 5. Confirm the amount at checkout if you pay in Canadian dollars.

Paying for Mullvad from Canada

Mullvad is the only provider we review that showed us a Canadian-dollar figure. Its pricing page lists CAD among nine accepted currencies and shows about CA$8 (CA$8.02 when we read it) as its equivalent of EUR 5. That is Mullvad's figure, not ours.

Because every plan length costs the same per month, the choice comes down to convenience. Paying monthly lets you stop at any time without losing a discount. Paying for a year means one charge instead of twelve. Mullvad's 14-day money-back guarantee is shorter than the 30 days offered by NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Surfshark and Proton VPN, so decide quickly whether it suits you.

As with any VPN, Mullvad protects your connection and moves trust to Mullvad. The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada noted in a 2017 blog post that VPNs are a "poor way of guaranteeing online anonymity". Our guide to what a VPN hides sets out the limits.

Common questions

How much is Mullvad in Canadian dollars?

Mullvad charges EUR 5 a month. Its pricing page shows its own equivalents, including about CA$8 (CA$8.02 when we read it), and lists CAD among the currencies it accepts. Confirm the final amount at checkout.

Why does Mullvad have no free plan?

Mullvad has no free plan or free trial. Its pricing page has a section titled "Why no free plan?" that explains its reasons. It offers a 14-day money-back guarantee instead, except for cash payments.

Does Mullvad still support OpenVPN?

On the pages we checked, Mullvad describes WireGuard as its protocol. OpenVPN appears on its site only in the company history, not as a current option.
